The Double Monikers
As founder of the Michigan Aurora Chasers and a published author, Melissa has a storied background. Not only has she lived in three states including Ohio, Minnesota and Michigan, but she also led a quiet life before she caught her first Aurora — when she was known by a different name.
Born Melissa F. Kaelin, she writes and publishes under her maiden name, to honor her past and her family members who tragically passed away in 2009 and 2011. Her beloved and unique family name of Kaelin serves as a pseudonym or pen name. At her day job, she goes by Melissa F. Priebe, after she was married — and later divorced — from a 14-year relationship. As of May 2024, she still carries the surname from the marriage that took place in Minnesota.
An internet search of either name also turns up an entirely different portfolio of work, due to the coincidence of the timing. Melissa F. Priebe is known for work in nonprofits and colleges and universities. Melissa F. Kaelin is an accomplished journalist, freelance writer, published poet and creative writer.
She jokingly refers to Kaelin as “her secret identity” although it’s really no secret, because the connection between the monikers can easily be revealed in an internet search. Most of all, Kaelin is her birth name.
While she does not have the family she imagined she would at this age, Melissa lives a fulfilling life of travel, adventure and Aurora Chasing. She is grateful to everyone who has lifted her up at every step of the way, especially in the face of letting go and starting over. Now, she lives an amazing life, enjoying the freedom of a single lifestyle, with Elio, the Spunky Pup, as her only constant companion. Her puppy turned one year old, and with a clear sun on his back, he might get a new moniker too! Elio, the Sun Dog.
Maybe it’s a testament to how we are all changing and evolving, and our worlds will expand with the universe if we let them.
Melissa is fortunate to have the support of many friends and fellow chasers across the state, the country and the world. She couldn’t have asked for more!
My chosen family, my new tribe.
