From the 69th Parallel to the 45th Parallel! I adventured up to Headlands International Dark Sky Park, March 20-22, 2026, to host the 4th Annual Michigan Aurora Chasers Workshop, a guided chase on the Friday before, and the Shape of the Sky Book Project Launch the Sunday after! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much snow in the lower peninsula, but what an amazing experience! You can get into gear, or you can GEAR UP! The Arctic snowsuits at Northern Lights Village were legit. Cozy in the Arctic air at all hours of the night! Ironically, on our one clear night, which was predicted to be cloudy, I had hired a driver. I spotted the Aurora first that night, after mastering our subtle northern horizons views as a Michigan Aurora Chaser! On our one clear night in Finland’s Arctic Circle, after adventuring all week in the falling snow, by the time I returned to my bed under a glass ceiling, Aurora had gone into recovery — shimmering in the night with a subtle, diffuse hue. Standing at Kaunispää, the highest point in the Finnish Sami Laplands, overlooking the Russian border, and catching the Aurora! It’s hard to believe this was last month already, but catching the “Revontulet”, or “Fox fires”, in Finland was a dream! Since I arrived back in the U.S. after my tour of Finland’s Arctic Magnificence, I’ve been focused on trying to save science, advocate for funding public services, and persuade our peers that diversity benefits everyone. What a joy to have visited such a progressive, intellectual society in Finland! Sleigh ride with a Sami reindeer herder.
