Sailing the “FIN-EST” boat in Europe to Tallinn on the Baltic Sea! Lovely details from our hotel in Helsinki. Visiting the Sanomatalo in the heart of Helsinki is a fascinating visual experience. The building houses radio stations, media and the press, like the Helsinki Times. With every inch of the architecture, the structure was designed to promote transparency. Constructed mostly of glass and metal, it is completely see-through! The public can mingle on the first floor, peering into every radio studio as popular shows are recorded, and every detail, down to the elevator of the 9-story building, is visible from the inside out. To walk into the Oodi library in Helsinki is to feel at once cozy, inspired, and intellectually stimulated. This gift to the people celebrating 100 years of independence is one of the most gorgeous pieces of architecture in the city. The lighting gathers in acoustic alcoves in the ceiling, birch wood informs the design, the windows are enormous and curved with a balcony and coffee shop on top, and the glass is etched with a pattern of falling snow which softens the sunlight on the inside and gives the library an everlasting frosted appearance on the outside. To read or write or gather, people stretch out on the enormous, wide steps on every floor, and there is a secret door in the children’s section— that leads to a soft bright reading nook that looks like the inside of a pumpkin! The 24-hour flower market at the Medieval Gate in Estonia is lovely! We took the ferry to Estonia for a day. It is an incredible boat!
