Below the 45th Parallel: Book Release

It’s not even noon on the day of my book release for “Below the 45th Parallel,” and I’m absolutely blown away!

Even at midnight, the excitement for my new guidebook was buzzing and copies had already been ordered. So, there it is! I’ve published a unique guidebook, scheduled a book launch party, and created a digital resource guide in one exciting sweep!

The third book I’ve published, “Below the 45th Parallel: The Beginner’s Guide to Chasing the Aurora in the Great Lakes Region” offers those who are getting started lots of pointers and advice for catching the Northern Lights in the places where they are extremely rare — at and below the latitude of 45° North.

This book was inspired in no small part by the Michigan Aurora Chasers, a group I created on January 20, 2021. Since the group’s inception, we have grown to a friendly, active community of over 50,000 Aurora Chasers, and we have been featured in the local, state and national news for our success. As the group founder, I’ve helped hundreds of adventurers catch the Northern Lights for the first time — even in the midst of daunting light pollution, relentless cloud cover, low latitudes, and densely forested terrain.

You see, it’s not always easy to catch Aurora at below the 45th Parallel. Here, Aurora displays can be subtle, brief, unexpected and barely visible to the unaided eye. But with advice from seasoned Aurora Chasers like myself, who have experienced their fair share of failure, you can find out what it takes to catch this elusive natural phenomenon in a location near you.

Just as I do on social media, I’ve tried to share my best advice in an accessible way, simplifying some of the complicated science behind the Aurora and the solar wind, and discussing it in a warm, conversational tone. I’ve devoted sections to many of the major challenges facing Aurora Chasers, and I’ve created simple numbered and bulleted lists that anyone can use when they are out there, in the dark, on the chase, pursuing the lights!

For over 10 years, I have been volunteering in the Aurora Chasing community, and I absolutely love it! Even on the nights when it becomes painstakingly difficult. Even on the nights when we get aced. I find so much inspiration in sharing the Aurora’s dance with others. My goal is to help more people find, understand and celebrate the elusive Northern Lights!

There is no greater feeling than when I turn to an absolute stranger, only to hear them say I have helped their dreams come true. To everyone out there, I wish you good luck on the Aurora Chasing trail!

So many awesome opportunities await:

It’s pretty amazing how the stars align when you set out to chase something you love and pursue your dreams. I can hardly believe it, but just in time for this book release, I was also interviewed by WDIV Local 4 News in Detroit about the group I founded less than two years ago. The interview is being advertised now, and it will air on Friday, December 16th.

In my own social life, I met an incredible person just before the final interview, and without even knowing it, he inspired me to share the real story of how I fell in love with chasing the Northern Lights. What an adventure it has been!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the warm reception of my new book! Publishing a guidebook on a topic that is so near and dear to me means the world. I hope you take a few moments to consider the wonder that comes with Aurora Chasing in the mid-latitudes, and I really hope you enjoy “Below the 45th Parallel”!
